Humantay Lake is one of the most spectacular natural destinations near Cusco, offering an unforgettable adventure through breathtaking Andean landscapes. Along the journey, travelers are treated to stunning views of the Apurímac Canyon, towering snow-capped peaks, and pristine mountain scenery. Fed by the melting glaciers of Humantay Mountain, the lake is famous for its crystal-clear waters, which display mesmerizing shades of turquoise, blue, and emerald depending on the light and weather conditions.

Surrounded by majestic mountains and untouched nature, Humantay Lake provides a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can reconnect with the natural world, breathe fresh mountain air, and experience the spiritual energy that the Andes have inspired for centuries.

Description

Located approximately 128 km (79 miles) northwest of Cusco, in the district of Mollepata, Humantay Lake is one of the most popular full-day excursions in the region. An early departure is highly recommended to fully appreciate the serenity and beauty of the landscape before larger groups arrive.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive through the Andean highlands, passing remarkable natural landmarks such as the impressive Apurímac Canyon and the magnificent snow-capped Salkantay Mountain, one of the highest and most revered peaks in the Cusco region. Along the way, travelers often stop in Mollepata for breakfast before continuing toward the trailhead.

The hiking portion of the excursion starts in Soraypampa, where a mountain trail gradually ascends through stunning alpine scenery toward Humantay Lake. Although the altitude can be challenging, the route rewards visitors with incredible panoramic views and a sense of tranquility far removed from the noise of everyday life.

After approximately ninety minutes of hiking, visitors reach the breathtaking shores of Humantay Lake, located at 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level. Nestled beneath the towering Humantay and Salkantay mountains, the lake creates a truly magical setting where nature takes center stage.

For many travelers, this sacred landscape offers more than scenic beauty. It is also a place to honor the traditions of the Andes by expressing gratitude to the Apus and Pachamama through ancient customs such as the K’intu ceremony, a symbolic offering made with coca leaves that reflects the deep spiritual connection between local communities and nature.
