Description

Located approximately 128 km (79 miles) northwest of Cusco, in the district of Mollepata, Humantay Lake is one of the most popular full-day excursions in the region. An early departure is highly recommended to fully appreciate the serenity and beauty of the landscape before larger groups arrive.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive through the Andean highlands, passing remarkable natural landmarks such as the impressive Apurímac Canyon and the magnificent snow-capped Salkantay Mountain, one of the highest and most revered peaks in the Cusco region. Along the way, travelers often stop in Mollepata for breakfast before continuing toward the trailhead.

The hiking portion of the excursion starts in Soraypampa, where a mountain trail gradually ascends through stunning alpine scenery toward Humantay Lake. Although the altitude can be challenging, the route rewards visitors with incredible panoramic views and a sense of tranquility far removed from the noise of everyday life.

After approximately ninety minutes of hiking, visitors reach the breathtaking shores of Humantay Lake, located at 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level. Nestled beneath the towering Humantay and Salkantay mountains, the lake creates a truly magical setting where nature takes center stage.
