Description

The Sacred Valley of the Incas follows the natural course of the Willcamayu River (Vilcanota River), a region renowned for its exceptional climate, fertile lands, and outstanding agricultural production. Pisac

Pisac was one of the most important Inca cities, even larger than Machupicchu in its time. Strategically located, it served as a key commercial and cultural link between the Amazon rainforest and the capital of Cusco. Through this network, valuable products such as coca leaves were exchanged, functioning as an essential form of currency within the Inca economy.

Built entirely of stone, Pisac showcases impressive agricultural terraces and urban structures adapted to steep mountain slopes. This engineering allowed the Incas to cultivate crops in areas that would otherwise be unsuitable for agriculture, demonstrating their exceptional mastery of the natural environment.

Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is a living Inca town situated at the meeting point of the Vilcanota and Patacancha rivers, in a narrow valley that served as a strategic control point toward Machupicchu. Massive stone walls were constructed across the valley to regulate access, highlighting its importance as both a military and administrative center.

At the top of the mountain lies the Temple of the Sun, an impressive ceremonial complex built with enormous stones transported from quarries located several kilometers away. The precision and scale of its construction continue to amaze visitors and researchers alike.

Ollantaytambo is also the only Inca settlement that remains continuously inhabited to this day. Its original urban layout is still preserved, featuring stone foundations, adobe structures, and narrow streets crossed by ancient water channels that reflect Inca engineering and urban planning.

Chinchero

The archaeological site of Chinchero served as the royal estate of the Inca Emperor Tupac Inca Yupanqui. The complex is surrounded by agricultural terraces and includes ceremonial spaces, remains of Inca structures, and a large central plaza that highlights its historical importance.

One of its most distinctive features is the colonial church built atop Inca foundations during the Spanish colonial period. This structure symbolizes the cultural transformation of the region, where indigenous and colonial influences merged over time.
