Description
The Maras, Moray & Salineras Tour is a fascinating journey through some of the most remarkable cultural and agricultural sites of the Sacred Valley. This experience combines history, engineering, and living traditions, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the ingenuity of the Inca civilization and the colonial heritage that followed.
During the excursion, you will visit Chinchero, an important Inca settlement and former royal estate of Emperor Tupac Inca Yupanqui; Moray, a unique agricultural research center designed by the Incas; and the impressive Salineras de Maras, where thousands of salt ponds continue to be used for traditional salt production to this day.
Chinchero
Known as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley, Chinchero served as the royal residence of the Inca Emperor Tupac Inca Yupanqui. The complex features extensive agricultural terraces, ceremonial spaces, and the remains of important Inca structures that reflect the architectural sophistication of the empire.
One of Chinchero’s most distinctive features is its beautiful colonial church, built during the Spanish colonial period atop Inca foundations. The church represents the blending of two historical eras and stands as an important symbol of the region’s cultural transformation.
Moray
Moray is one of the most intriguing archaeological sites in Peru, famous for its enormous circular terraces carved into the landscape. These concentric terraces create different microclimates, with temperatures varying between the upper and lower levels.
Researchers believe the Incas used Moray as an agricultural experimentation center, where they studied crop adaptation, developed new cultivation techniques, and tested plant species under varying environmental conditions. The site demonstrates the advanced agricultural knowledge that helped sustain one of the largest civilizations in the Americas.
Salineras
The Salineras de Maras are a spectacular network of more than 4,000 salt ponds fed by a natural underground spring rich in minerals. For centuries, local families have maintained these terraces using traditional methods passed down through generations.
As the mineral-rich water flows into the ponds, the sun naturally evaporates the liquid, leaving behind salt crystals that are carefully harvested. Among the different varieties produced here, the famous Maras Pink Salt is particularly valued for its unique flavor, mineral content, and culinary appeal.
The stunning contrast between the white salt pools and the surrounding mountain landscape makes Salineras one of the most photogenic destinations in the Sacred Valley.
