Description
The Maras, Moray, Salineras & Ollantaytambo Tour is an ideal experience for travelers heading to Machupicchu who wish to explore some of the Sacred Valley’s most fascinating cultural and archaeological attractions along the way. This journey combines Inca history, advanced agricultural innovation, traditional salt production, and one of the most strategic towns of the Inca Empire.
The tour includes visits to Chinchero, the former royal estate of Emperor Tupac Inca Yupanqui; Moray, an extraordinary agricultural experimentation center; the impressive Salineras de Maras with its thousands of salt ponds; and concludes in Ollantaytambo, one of the best-preserved Inca towns and the main gateway to Machupicchu, where travelers can continue their journey by train.
Chinchero
Located in the heart of the Sacred Valley, Chinchero was once the royal residence of the Inca Emperor Tupac Inca Yupanqui. The archaeological complex features extensive terraces, ceremonial plazas, and remnants of important Inca structures that highlight the significance of this ancient settlement.
A beautiful colonial church stands atop the original Inca foundations, reflecting the historical transition from the Inca period to the Spanish colonial era. Today, Chinchero remains one of the most culturally rich destinations in the region.
Moray
Moray is one of the most unique archaeological sites in Peru, renowned for its impressive circular terraces descending deep into the earth. These concentric rings create distinct microclimates, generating temperature variations between each level.
Experts believe the Incas used Moray as an agricultural research center, where they experimented with crop adaptation, cultivation techniques, and the development of new plant varieties. The site is a remarkable example of the scientific knowledge and innovation achieved by the Inca civilization.
Salineras
The Salineras de Maras consist of more than 4,000 salt ponds fed by a naturally occurring underground saltwater spring. For generations, local families have harvested salt using traditional methods that remain largely unchanged.
As the mineral-rich water flows through a network of channels into the ponds, natural evaporation leaves behind valuable salt crystals. Among the different varieties produced, the famous Maras Pink Salt is particularly appreciated for its unique mineral composition and culinary uses.
The striking landscape created by thousands of gleaming white salt pools against the Andean mountains makes Salineras one of the most iconic attractions in the Sacred Valley.
Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is one of the last living Inca towns and one of the most important archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley. Its strategic location at the confluence of the Vilcanota and Patacancha rivers allowed it to serve as a key administrative, military, and religious center of the Inca Empire.
The site is famous for its massive stone terraces and the impressive Temple of the Sun, situated high on the mountainside. The enormous stones used in its construction were transported from distant quarries, demonstrating the remarkable engineering skills of the Incas. Today, Ollantaytambo remains the primary departure point for travelers continuing by train to Machupicchu.
