Description

The South Valley of Cusco follows the course of the Huatanay River, a tributary of the Vilcanota River, and represents one of the most important cultural and natural corridors near the city of Cusco. This fertile valley is known for its rich landscapes, traditional towns, and deep historical significance, as it played a key role in the development of pre-Inca and Inca civilizations.

Along this route, visitors can experience authentic Andean culture in villages famous for their traditional gastronomy, including dishes such as fried pork (chicharrón), baked guinea pig, and artisanal bread production. Due to its strategic location, the South Valley also served as an important connection route between Cusco and the highlands of Peru and Bolivia.

The South Valley Tour includes visits to three outstanding archaeological and cultural sites: Tipón, Piquillacta, and Andahuaylillas, each showcasing a different aspect of the region’s historical and architectural heritage.

Tipón

Tipón is an impressive Inca archaeological complex located at 3,560 meters above sea level, renowned for its advanced hydraulic engineering system. The site features perfectly constructed agricultural terraces irrigated by a natural water spring, demonstrating the Incas’ exceptional knowledge of water management.

Its intricate network of stone canals continues to function today, showcasing one of the finest examples of pre-Columbian hydraulic engineering. From its elevated position, Tipón also offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Piquillacta

Piquillacta is a large pre-Inca urban center built by the Wari culture, one of the most important civilizations before the rise of the Incas. The site is characterized by its extensive urban planning, constructed using stone and mud mortar.

Within its massive walls, visitors can observe hundreds of structures, some of which feature multiple levels. The city is particularly notable for its highly organized layout, with wide streets, rectangular blocks, and clearly defined ceremonial and residential areas, reflecting an advanced understanding of urban design.

Andahuaylillas

Andahuaylillas is a charming colonial town known for its peaceful atmosphere, cobblestone streets, and traditional plaza. Its main attraction is the Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of America” due to its extraordinary artistic richness.

Inside the church, visitors can admire beautifully preserved murals, altarpieces, and gold-leaf decorations that reflect the Andean Baroque style. These artworks were used during the colonial period as a means of religious instruction for the local population, blending European artistic influences with indigenous traditions.
